Unknowns on both sides

Gather the unknowns on one side to solve equations like 5x + 2 = 3x + 10.

Planned. This module is part of the plan and is not written yet.

Why it matters

When two offers compete, such as a bicycle hire with a bigger fixed charge but a cheaper hourly rate, an equation with the unknown on both sides finds when they cost the same.

Inside the module.

5 lessons in order, about 90 minutes in all, then a short test. Learners go at their own pace; the minutes are a guide, not a timetable.

  1. Lesson 1: Unknowns on both sides

    See on a balance why 5x + 2 = 3x + 10 can be simplified by removing 3x from each side.

    Explain15 min, from minute 0

  2. Lesson 2: Gathering the unknowns

Subtract the smaller x term from both sides, then solve as a two-step equation.

Worked example20 min, from minute 15

  3. Lesson 3: Solving and checking

Solve equations with unknowns on both sides and check each by substitution.

    Practice25 min, from minute 35

  4. Lesson 4: Trickier cases

Handle negative terms and answers that are fractions or negative numbers.

Worked example15 min, from minute 60

  5. Lesson 5: Review

Mixed questions, with feedback on each.

    Review15 min, from minute 75

  6. End-of-module test

Gather the unknown on one side, solve equations with unknowns on both sides, and check each answer by substitution.

Mastered at 85% or more. Retake it until you pass; nothing is lost, and each try gives feedback.

Already know it? A Challenge Test (planned) clears the whole module: 90% overall, no objective below 75%.

Practicalities

Draft outline · in review
  • Built to run offline

Planned to run on the Lantern's own computer, with no internet needed.

  • Languages

Planned first in English; every module aims to reach all of the Lantern's languages.

Try a question.

One question from the module, as a learner would meet it. Have a go, then open the worked solution a step at a time.

Draft outline · in review

Solve 7x − 4 = 3x + 16, and check your answer.

Work it out on paper first, then show the answer and mark it yourself.

What a learner can do after it

  1. Move the unknown to one side by adding or subtracting a term from both sides.
  2. Solve equations such as 5x + 2 = 3x + 10 and check the answer.
