No results yet. Here is our promise.

Lantern 1 in Ewossa is under construction, so there is nothing to measure yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. This is what we will measure, how we will test it, and how you will hear.

To everyone thinking of helping

  • Lantern 1 in Ewossa under construction
  • No learning results yet
  • Lanterns 2 to 5 planned, villages to be confirmed
  • Funds raised being confirmed
  • Will publish whatever it shows

Six numbers, from the day a Lantern opens.

These are the targets in our monitoring plan, for each Lantern. Until a Lantern is open they are promises, so we print them as specimens: samples of the real thing, not results.

  • TargetM-01Enrolledtarget150

Enrolled. Children enrolled at each Lantern. Target: 150, target.

  • TargetM-02Activea month80

Active. Children learning in a given month, not just signed up. Target: 80, a month.

  • TargetM-03Masterya month6+

Mastery. Objectives mastered per child per month, at the 85% mastery mark. Target: 6+, a month.

  • TargetM-04Girlstarget45%+

Girls. The share of learners who are girls. Target: 45%+, target.

  • TargetM-05Uptimetarget95%+

Uptime. How much of the time the Lantern is up and running. Target: 95%+, target.

  • TargetM-06Power sharedmeteredkWh

Power shared. Electricity the Lantern supplies to the community building, a clinic if there is one. Target: measured in kilowatt hours.

We will test it properly, and publish whatever it shows.

  • Two tests, a year apart

Reading and maths assessed with EGRA and EGMA at month 0 and again at month 12, by external enumerators.

  • A village to compare with

A comparison village with 80 children per site, so we can tell what the Lantern changed and what would have happened anyway.

  • A target we can miss

We are aiming for a gain of 0.3 standard deviations. If we fall short, you will see it.

  • Written down first

We will pre-register the plan before the first test, so the goalposts cannot move after the results come in.

  • Partner to be named

No evaluation partner is appointed yet. When one is, we will name them here.

Opened in public at month 12. Published whatever it shows.

Every update dated, sourced and honest.

We have not fixed a reporting calendar we cannot keep. We have fixed the rules every update will follow.

  • Dated and sourced

Every figure we publish says when it was measured, where it came from and what it counts.

  • Totals, never children

Children appear in reports as totals and shares. Never a name, a face or a record.

  • Raised means received

A funding total appears only once it has been checked against what actually arrived.

  • Pictures say what they are

Designs are labelled as designs and illustrations as illustrations. Build photographs appear once they are verified.

  • Bad news too

If something is not working, we will say so, and say what we are changing.

Raised so far: being confirmed.

We have not published a funding total because none has been verified yet. When one is, it will appear here and on each Lantern, and not before.

Lantern 1 is not raising funds. Lanterns 2 to 5 need an estimated $495,000 between them. A Lantern is built only once it is fully funded.

Statement · Lanterns 2 to 5Estimates in US dollars

To raise, estimated$495,000

Raised so far Being confirmed

Notice to sendersTargets are planning estimates in US dollars. Funds raised are being confirmed and will appear only once verified. Every vignette is a design visualization of the same Lantern.

Give us something to measure.

Every number on this page starts the day a Lantern opens. Help light the next one, and you will see what it does.
