Order of operations
Work out calculations in the agreed order, and use brackets to change it.
Planned. This module is part of the plan and is not written yet.
Why it matters
Two people can work out 2 + 3 × 4 and get 20 or 14; an agreed order means a price list, a recipe or a calculator gives everyone the same answer.

Inside the module.
5 lessons in order, about 60 minutes in all, then a short test. Learners go at their own pace; the minutes are a guide, not a timetable.
Draft outline · in review
Lesson 1: Why order matters
Compare two answers to 2 + 3 × 4 and decide why everyone needs one rule.
Discussion10 min, from minute 0
Lesson 2: BODMAS
Brackets, then powers, then × and ÷, then + and −, working left to right within each step.
Explain15 min, from minute 10
Lesson 3: Worked examples
Step through calculations that mix all four operations and brackets.
Worked example12 min, from minute 25
Lesson 4: Placing brackets
Add brackets so that 4 + 6 × 2 gives 20 instead of 16.
Practice15 min, from minute 37
Lesson 5: Review
Mixed order-of-operations questions, with feedback on each.
Review8 min, from minute 52
End-of-module test
Work out calculations in the agreed order of operations, and place brackets to reach a target answer.
Mastered at 85% or more. Retake it until you pass; nothing is lost, and each try gives feedback.
Already know it? A Challenge Test (planned) clears the whole module: 90% overall, no objective below 75%.

Practicalities
Draft outline · in reviewBuilt to run offline
Planned to run on the Lantern's own computer, with no internet needed.
Languages
Planned first in English; every module aims to reach all of the Lantern's languages.
Try a question.
One question from the module, as a learner would meet it. Have a go, then open the worked solution a step at a time.
Draft outline · in review
Work out 18 − 4 × (5 − 2).
Work it out on paper first, then show the answer and mark it yourself.

What a learner can do after it
- Work out calculations with brackets first, then × and ÷, then + and −.
- Add brackets to make a calculation give a chosen answer.

Alignment in review until a qualified teacher or lecturer checks it. No exam body, university or vendor endorses us; learners still sit the real exam.
