Dividing fractions

How many halves in three? Divide with fractions, with pictures first.

Planned. This module is part of the plan and is not written yet.

MAMA-FDP-OPS-0404Level6–7

Why it matters

How many quarter-litre cups can you fill from a 3-litre jug of water? That is 3 ÷ 1/4, and the answer, 12, is bigger than 3.

Inside the module.

5 lessons in order, about 75 minutes in all, then a short test. Learners go at their own pace; the minutes are a guide, not a timetable.

Draft outline · in review

  1. Lesson 1: How many fit?

Use a diagram to see 3 ÷ 1/2 as 'how many halves fit into 3?'.

    Explain15 min, from minute 0

  2. Lesson 2: Diagrams with unit fractions

Divide whole numbers by halves, thirds and quarters with drawings.

    Practice15 min, from minute 15

  3. Lesson 3: The reciprocal

Turn the divisor upside down and multiply, and see why it gives the same answer.

    Explain15 min, from minute 30

  4. Lesson 4: Fraction by fraction

Work out 3/4 ÷ 3/8 with the reciprocal, then check with a diagram.

Worked example20 min, from minute 45

  5. Lesson 5: Review

Mixed questions, with feedback on each.

    Review10 min, from minute 65

  6. End-of-module test

Divide whole numbers and fractions by fractions, using diagrams and the reciprocal method.

Mastered at 85% or more. Retake it until you pass; nothing is lost, and each try gives feedback.

Already know it? A Challenge Test (planned) clears the whole module: 90% overall, no objective below 75%.

Practicalities

Draft outline · in review
  • Built to run offline

Planned to run on the Lantern's own computer, with no internet needed.

  • Languages

Planned first in English; every module aims to reach all of the Lantern's languages.

Try a question.

One question from the module, as a learner would meet it. Have a go, then open the worked solution a step at a time.

Draft outline · in review

Work out 2/3 ÷ 4/9. Give the answer as a mixed number.

Work it out on paper first, then show the answer and mark it yourself.

Particulars

What a learner can do after it

  1. Divide a whole number by a fraction using a diagram.
  2. Divide fractions by multiplying by the reciprocal.

  • Aligned to Common Corefull · in review6.NS.A.1

Alignment in review until a qualified teacher or lecturer checks it. No exam body, university or vendor endorses us; learners still sit the real exam.

Challenge Test

Planned: a Challenge Test to prove you know it and skip it. Pass at 90% overall, with no objective below 75%.

The route here.

Everything this module builds on, drawn as a route from its foundations. Solid lanes must be mastered first, or cleared by a Challenge Test; dashed lanes are suggestions that never lock anything.
