Multiply fractions by whole numbers and by other fractions.

Planned. This module is part of the plan and is not written yet.

MAMA-FDP-OPS-0303Level5–7

Why it matters

If beans grow on 2/3 of a field and 3/4 of the beans are ready, multiplying the fractions tells the farmer how much of the whole field to pick today.

Inside the module.

5 lessons in order, about 60 minutes in all, then a short test. Learners go at their own pace; the minutes are a guide, not a timetable.

  1. Lesson 1: A fraction times a whole number

    See 4 × 2/3 as four lots of 2/3.

    Explain15 min, from minute 0

  2. Lesson 2: A fraction of a fraction

    Use a shaded rectangle to see that 1/2 × 1/3 = 1/6.

    Explain15 min, from minute 15

  3. Lesson 3: Multiply tops, multiply bottoms

Multiply the numerators and the denominators, and see why it matches the picture.

Worked example10 min, from minute 30

  4. Lesson 4: Simplifying

Multiply fractions and give each answer in its simplest form.

    Practice15 min, from minute 40

  5. Lesson 5: Review

Mixed questions, with feedback on each.

    Review5 min, from minute 55

  6. End-of-module test

Multiply fractions by whole numbers and by other fractions, and simplify the answers.

Mastered at 85% or more. Retake it until you pass; nothing is lost, and each try gives feedback.

Already know it? A Challenge Test (planned) clears the whole module: 90% overall, no objective below 75%.

Practicalities

  • Built to run offline

Planned to run on the Lantern's own computer, with no internet needed.

  • Languages

Planned first in English; every module aims to reach all of the Lantern's languages.

Try a question.

One question from the module, as a learner would meet it. Have a go, then open the worked solution a step at a time.

Wanjiru plants beans on 2/3 of her field. Today she picks 3/4 of the bean area. What fraction of the whole field does she pick today? Simplify your answer.

Work it out on paper first, then show the answer and mark it yourself.

Particulars

What a learner can do after it

  1. Multiply a fraction by a whole number.
  2. Multiply two fractions and simplify the answer.

Alignment in review until a qualified teacher or lecturer checks it. No exam body, university or vendor endorses us; learners still sit the real exam.

Challenge Test

Planned: a Challenge Test to prove you know it and skip it. Pass at 90% overall, with no objective below 75%.

The route here.

Everything this module builds on, drawn as a route from its foundations. Solid lanes must be mastered first, or cleared by a Challenge Test; dashed lanes are suggestions that never lock anything.
